Mobile Phone Data Forensics

Mobile Phone Forensics is the retrieval and examination of data found or recovered from mobile phones, PDAs, SIM/USIM cards, computer memory cards and hard drives. Worldwide mobile phone usage has increased dramatically in recent years and as such the convenience of easy communication, any time and anywhere, has lead to this communication tool being regularly utilised in a large number of the cases we investigate. The inevitable trace of evidence from mobile phone usage to clues about people's whereabouts, actions, and intentions delivers the need for mobile phone forensics. Information that can be retrieved from a phone include contact lists, SMS messages, address books, call logs, and location information. This kind of information can make or break a case both in investigations into infidelity right through to corporate fraud investigations.

Here is an interesting article on Mobile Forensics: http://www.utica.edu/academic/institutes/ecii/publications/articles/1C33DF76-D8D3-EFF5-47AE3681FD948D68.pdf

  1. Mobile phones are really cool when it comes to forensics for cases. If someone is missing and if they their phone on they can fin the person with a GPS in the phone. Also now days if you can 911 for help that someone has kidnap you or something you only need 45 seconds for them to be able to trace your call. The only thing is though they can only track the satellite that the phone is using they don't get a direct location. But I think as technology goes on they will be able to fix that.

  2. Yes cell phones are becoming increasingly important for tracking down criminals. I watch many homicide investigation shows and there have been uncountable times when cell phone records help investigators catch their suspect in the act. There are sometimes cell phones found at a crime scene and investigators will go through them to help get on the right track. Or other times they will track cell phone towers to pinpoint where a person was at the time they made a call. It is really amazing how cell phones have helped forensics. Nice blog and keep up the good work!

  3. As technology changes and the way crimes can be committed so will the ways in which criminals can be caught. Using someones cell phone to find out where they have been and what they have been up to will be helpful. People make most of their calls on cell phones. Criminals can no longer hide. In todays world police can go through your home phone, computer, cell phone, and credit cards to find out what a person has been up to. This is just another case of technology making the world a better place.

  4. Technology has evolved to the point that investigators are constantly forced to adapt with these changes to figure out ways to capture those who break the law. Although cell phones have become extremely popular in a positive way to society there are those that utilize this great technological gift and abuse it in the form of breaking the law with it such as something as simple as relaying key information that keeps authorities from catching up to criminals. We need to appreciate this gift but at the same time know that it can be exploited for negative affects on our society.
