An earlier and less successful lie detector or polygraph machine was invented by James Mackenzie in 1902. However, the modern polygraph machine was invented by John Larson in 1921. John Larson, a University of California medical student, invented the modern lie detector (polygraph) in 1921. Used in police interrogation and investigation since 1924, the lie detector is still controversial among psychologists and is not always judicially acceptable. The name polygraph comes from the fact that the machine records several different body responses simultaneously as the individual is questioned.

A lie detector measures different waves of brain activity when given a certain series of questions to answer. Psychologists probably do not find the lie detector judicially acceptable becauser there are ways around it.
ReplyDeleteSome people can remain so calm when they lie that the brain activity doesn't even change. If a person practices this enough it is possible for them to override the system. Therefore if this is possible, the lie detector test is not 100% reliable.
Your blog interests me because it deals with advances in the technology of Forensics. I love watching shows such as CSI, NCIS, and Law & order where all these technologies are used to solve crimes. It is amazing how something such as a fingerprint can lead investigators to a murder suspect or a missing child. The technology that was created to uncover fingerprints still assists in investigations and is one of the first things investigators look for. It is also fascinating that someone discovered the link between subtle body reactions and whether or not someone is telling the truth. The lie detector is still used today and although people may argue that it is not accurate, the results are trusted by many.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reviewing your blog and look forward to the Present and the Future portions.
The polygraph i find so cool. When a machine can determine weather a person is lying or not. This machine has helped many people determine if a spouse was cheating on his or her lover. This is never more apparent then in Maury and Steve Wilkos episodes. It is a very cool machine to have.
